A Healing Tune: Trina and Hubert

For Trina and Hubert Perry, self-sufficiency has always been a way of life. They like to handle life’s challenges with quiet resilience, so asking for help was never easy. But when faced with an unexpected hurdle following Hubert’s kidney transplant, they found themselves in a situation where help was not just necessary—it was a blessing.

Hubert’s kidney failure came as a shock. While slightly diabetic, doctors couldn’t pinpoint the exact cause. Hubert’s kidney transplant was made possible by a remarkable gift—a living donor who had worked alongside him for a decade in civil service at Fort Benning. Both Army veterans, their shared history made the act of giving even more profound, a bond of service extending beyond their time in uniform.

On December 4, 2024, he underwent a successful transplant. However, recovery required frequent medical appointments—four times a week—while living 70 miles away from the hospital. Insurance covered the surgery, but the uncertainty of how they would manage the post-op period weighed heavily on them. With Trina’s paid time off nearly gone, the stress was mounting.

That’s when Hubert’s aunt found Red Mountain Grace online. A quick call to Lindsey, the Care Coordinator, changed everything. Lindsey’s warmth and willingness to help, even picking Trina up when she was walking from the hospital, made all the difference.

For 57 nights, the Perrys found solace in their Red Mountain Grace apartment.

“Truly, you guys turned a scary, stressful event into a stress-free medical vacation,” Trina shared.

Their apartment became a haven, a place where Hubert could find comfort in familiar routines—like playing his favorite records. Whether it was Phil Collins, Billy Joel, classic rap like Dr. Dre and Ice Cube, or smooth R&B from Al B. Sure!, music became a soothing presence during their healing journey.

Being away from home during the holidays was difficult, but the gracious hospitality they received from Red Mountain Grace made it a season to remember. “All of the kindness that we have received has truly touched us, especially with it being Christmas,” Trina wrote. “We have been blessed from the outset of this journey, having a living donor, and God has multiplied our blessings by leading us to Red Mountain Grace.”

For a couple who has always given to others, accepting generosity was unfamiliar—but they were overwhelmed with gratitude. “We love to help people but hate to ask for help, so this whole scenario was difficult. But you made it so extremely easy.”

As they prepared to return home, Trina and Hubert reflected on their time with Red Mountain Grace. The organization’s support provided more than just lodging—it gave them peace, comfort, and a reminder that even the strongest, most independent people sometimes need a helping hand.
