Hope and Healing: The Sullivans
After experiencing the heartbreak of a late-term stillbirth in June 2023, McKenzie and Jacob Sullivan were cautiously optimistic when they found out they were expecting again. However, at 25 weeks, they were informed that their baby, Tanner, had severe pulmonary valve stenosis and would need immediate heart surgery after birth.
Understanding the urgency and complexity of the situation, McKenzie and Jacob turned to UAB Maternal-Fetal Medicine for specialized care. McKenzie’s history of preterm labor necessitated that she stay close to UAB from 30 weeks onward. Red Mountain Grace provided a comfortable apartment just minutes away from the hospital, ensuring McKenzie could attend her frequent appointments and be ready for Tanner’s arrival.
At 36 weeks, during a routine check-up, the severity of Tanner’s condition became apparent, leading to McKenzie being immediately induced. Tanner was born and rushed to the NICU, where he underwent heart surgery just 13 hours later. Despite facing additional challenges, including an infection that prolonged their hospital stay, the Sullivans remained resilient.
After spending 69 nights with us at Red Mountain Grace, the Sullivan family finally returned home with their healthy baby boy, Tanner, and his two big brothers.
As the Sullivans reflect on their journey, the mix of heartbreak and joy is palpable. Through the loss and the fear, they welcomed Tanner into the world with cautious hope. In those critical moments, Red Mountain Grace was there, offering a sanctuary close to the hospital where McKenzie and Jacob could focus on what truly mattered – Tanner’s arrival, successful surgery, and recovery.
“We are forever grateful for RMG for providing a safe place for the arrival of and heart surgery our baby needed. There are no words to describe how thankful I am for the team for going above and beyond to make my family not only safe and comfortable but also supported during such a trying time.”
In the midst of uncertainty, their time in Birmingham marked the beginning of a new chapter for their family. Their stay with us wasn’t just about providing shelter; it was about creating a space where they could find comfort and support during one of the most unsettling times of their lives. And now, as they settle back into their home, they carry with them not just memories of challenges overcome but the warmth and care they experienced, forever grateful for our gracious hospitality.
