From Soldier to Survivor: David
This Veterans Day, we are honored to share the inspiring story of David, a retired Army Green Beret, who has been staying with Red Mountain Grace since July 23, 2024. David’s remarkable journey has been filled with challenges, resilience, and the power of faith.
David served in the Army for 8 years before entering the Special Forces Qualification Course, where he completed an additional 2 years of rigorous training. After successfully earning the Green Beret, David dedicated 16 years to service as a member of the Army’s Special Forces, undertaking some of the most demanding and specialized missions in defense of our country. David settled in Niceville, Florida, with his wife Norma. Together, they have enjoyed a fulfilling life, celebrating 31 years of marriage and raising four children. However, in recent years, David has faced significant health struggles.
Initially, David began experiencing concerning symptoms, including those associated with Raynaud’s disease, which left his fingers turning purple. After a year of undiagnosed issues, doctors discovered that David had systemic sclerosis (scleroderma), a serious autoimmune condition that ultimately led to severe lung damage. Following two bouts of COVID and pneumonia, David was referred to UAB for a lung transplant evaluation. With the prognosis being grim, David’s pulmonologist advised him to prepare for the worst.
In the face of these overwhelming challenges, Norma found strength in her faith. As she recalls a pivotal moment, “I decided to trust in God with all of me. I was crying, but I kept repeating, ‘I trust in You, Lord.’” It was this unwavering faith that fueled their journey and led them to UAB, where they hoped for a miracle.
On June 19, 2024, David received his double-lung transplant, a procedure that many thought would not be possible due to his preexisting conditions. Norma attributes this miracle to the collective prayers of their family, friends, and community.
Now, just months into his recovery, David is breathing on his own without assistance and is grateful for the second chance at life. He is on anti-rejection medications and continues to work diligently through therapy.
Their stay at Red Mountain Grace has been a vital part of this journey. David and Norma are incredibly grateful for the support they’ve received, noting how our community’s kindness has allowed them to focus on healing without the burden of financial stress.
As we celebrate Veterans Day, we honor David for his service and resilience. His journey is a testament to the power of hope, faith, and community support. Thank you, David, for your bravery and for allowing us to be part of your remarkable story.
Together, we continue to stand with families like David and Norma’s, helping them navigate the challenges of long-term medical care.
