Una and Bill, a devoted couple from Mississippi, have been married for 34 years. Together, they’ve built a beautiful family with three children and four grandsons who light up their lives. Both work in shipbuilding, crafting Navy vessels, and are active members of their church where their faith shines brightly.

Bill loves being outdoors—whether he’s fishing, playing pickleball, or simply soaking in the beauty of nature. Spending time with their grandsons is one of their greatest joys, and their love for family is at the heart of everything they do. Being away from their loved ones during this time has been especially difficult, as they’ve now been in Birmingham for nearly 80 nights.

On September 6th, they arrived at UAB, and on September 29th, Bill underwent a life-saving heart transplant. Since then, the road to recovery has been filled with challenges. Bill has faced four bacterial infections that have set back his progress and nearly took his life. This week, he underwent another procedure to help clear the infection that has left him very weak.

During this time, Una shared how much the Red Mountain Grace apartment has meant to them: “I slept for three weeks in the hospital and then lived out of my car, from hotel to hotel, until I received the apartment. I can tell you it makes all the difference when I can go to the apartment and get a good night’s rest. Words cannot express adequately how grateful I am for this apartment.”

It’s an honor to walk alongside this incredible couple during such a difficult season, offering them a place of comfort and rest through their journey.
